I read recently the thread refarding SE/30 startup problems and the suggestion to use
alcohol to clean up around the capacitors.

I have an SE/30 that was given to me because it did not work. When I originally turned
it on, it booted fine. I installed a new version of OS 6.0.8, Word 4.0, Excel 3.0,
FileMaker 2.1, AOL 2.7, and HyperCard. I was then ready to actually start using the
computer. That's when it happened. Checkered screen at startup, no chime. I've not
been able to use the computer since, and placed it into storage.

Anyway, back to my point, after reading about the capacitor problems, I decided to
give it a try. In my search for alcohol, I found instead a can of electrical contact
cleaner with a brush. Since I could not actuall see any leakage by any of the
capacitors, I simply sprayed the contact cleaner onto the brush and literally painted
the entire motherboard with the cleaner.

After it dried out, I reassembled, and the computer booted for the first time in about
a year. I've rebooted several times and left the computer running for hours, and so
far so good.

I don't know if I actually did anything with the contact cleaner or if the computer
will intermitantly revert back to the checkerdboard screen, but time will tell.

Thanks for the advise in any case.

Ron
