On my 4 MB plus that diagonal gray striped screen dissapears very 
quickly (I hardly notice it), but then there is this smooth gray 
screen... To much time passes by before the floppy with the flashing 
question mark appears.

Interesting... I'll have a look into this.
I was rather convinced that the slow boot up had to do with the 
amount of RAM, because a third plus in my collection, containing 2.5 
mb RAM, also takes much longer in order to boot than my 1 MB Plus and 
my 1 MB 512. But you might very well be right. I'll crack open a plus 
when I am back home tonight, replace the RAM and see what happens.
