Yo compacters everywhere,

To my:

>> The 575 is still able to use the video slot where the CC/575 cannot.

the pickle <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> asks:

>Better question - *what* video slot?

The best part of this forum is the corrective education we receive. Here is mine: The
575 MoBo in my hand has a "J9" slot right alongside the PDS slot. My memory told me
this was for an "Apple Presentation System" card allowing you to export video. Wrong,
and while I don't have any idea of what J9 is actually for, it looks suspiciously like
a comm slot for a GV Platinum V modem which won't fit in a CC either. The video out
gadget in my hand specifically for the 575 is a PowerR product which has a clip and
circuit board that fastens over the U26 chip next to the battery. This PowerR video
gadget feeds two monitor ports, a two row Mac 15 pin and a three row VGA 15 pin. This
gadget won't fit inside a CC either. PowerR engineered it for the 575 case, not for
the CC case. I am at a bit of a loss to recall what the "Apple Presentation System"
actually is although I've got one buried in storage. I'll get about looking and let
you know. My original point was that the 575 motherboard!
, when installed into a Color Classic, cannot use all of the features that it can in a
575. Thus we are sacraficing Macs of greater utility to create cute Macs of lesser
utility.

Bye the waye, Al <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> suggested that he has fit a comm slot
ethernet card in a 575 motherboard in a Colo(u)r Classic. How in 'ell did you fit that
card into the CC case? Or is the comm slot ethernet card a lot lower profile than a
modem card? I've never seen a comm slot ethernet card.

Then -p shares:

>The 575 most definitely does *not* support anything other than 640x480
>without some hacking.

Hmmm... You know, I've always thought my first 575 MoBo a bit unique. When I first
removed it from a 575 and trialed it in a CC (running OS 7.6.1), It immediately put up
a 640x480 display. I had to crank the CC screen adjustments real hard to get a decent
fit to the screen. Put back into the 575, the Control Strip with this 'board showed
two additional italicized scans. And they worked! Not one of another half dozen 575
'boards has done this. From readings on the 575 and CC conversions, I understand Apple
messed with a few variations of what was a 575. It seems to me that multiple scan is
an analog board hardware feature to be supported by the motherboard and software. In
this one case, the multiple scan certainly manifest on this one 575. I have never
tried this 'board in another 575 nor have I even thought to look for multiple scans on
the two 575s available to me. High scan resolutions on a 13" screen seem kinda dumb to
me. My main Mac is my 2400 PowerBook and its small s!
creen at 800x600 is pretty harsh on my eyes. 832x624 on the 10" screen of a CC would
cause real squinting. Why the 640x480 in the CC? Again, the readings led me to
understand that not all CCs required surgery; some worked at 640x480 where most don't.
I just accepted it until my second and subsequent 575 'boards. Then I just thought
"Damn..." and was happy to see Stuart put up his CC website. This one 575 and its
'board is a bit like finding a IIsi ROM SIMM or a Classic II FPU card. Sort of reminds
me of bumblebees that aren't suppossed to fly. This one does.

I have no particular interest in fanning flames or my misinformation about slots and
specs of a 575 or any other Mac. Again, my single point was to be supportive of
another lister who raised the question (as I define it) of our logic for trashing Macs
of greater utility in order to create cute Macs of lesser utility. And I do it too.
