That sounds very much like a problem with the main circuit board of the 
monitor, possibly a failing component or a cold (bad) solder joint. 
Perhaps that's why your friend gave you it? ;-)
If you're happy opening up a case with several kV flying around, you 
could have a look inside, and with the power disconnected, try remaking 
any 'iffy' joints. But it's a bit of a lottery.
