I don't know if it will work with your streamer, or under Sys. 6 for that matter, but one tool that might be worth looking at it 'tar' - a Macintosh version of the Unix Tape ARchive utility.
I have this on my SE/30 (Sys. 7.1 Up.3) but I've never tried using it with a tape streamer as I don't have one - I just decompress .tar archive files with it. Anyway, it's only a small program and who knows - it might be what you're looking for, but I know comparitively little about it.
