I set up a Classic that had been sitting ouside on its face on my staging bench.
It first booted, then when I set it down it squealed, whistled and then went checkerboard. After looking at it, I found the Daughtercard was not firmly pressed into the slot. Correcting that, it booted perfectly. All you suffering checkerboards on those Classics~ Give that a look. Your daughtercard or its RAM may be shot or loose in the slot.
