GURU says this printer is upgradeable from zero RAM to 0.5MB to 1 meg
max (4 x 256k SIMMs). I've opened it up but can't for the life of me
see where to put the SIMMs. On one of the two boards that are
visible, there is a jumper for telling the printer whether the memory
is present or absent... and on the same board there are 4 empty
socket-like things in a row, but they look like they are for
chip-like objects, not 30-pin SIMMs (it looked like a row of c.10
pin-sockets on either side of the 'chip') -- is this some very old
kind of RAM? The Apple manual for this printer is not explicit about
where this optional memory goes, or what it looks like. However, an
Apple document on LaserWriter RAM requirements does mention that the
PLW LS does take diifferent RAM to normal, calling it 100ns 4-bit
DRAM chips or something... is that the official name for this sort of
memory?

I seem to remember seeing similarly wierd (but different) empty
20-pin sockets on my Apple Nubus short Ethernet card in my IIci...
and reading in the Apple manual for said Ethernet card that one could
add memory modules to the card... at the time I assumed these empty
sockets on the Ethernet card were for the RAM, but that it must be
some rare or obsolete form of RAM, pre-30-pin SIMMs. Now it looks
like this printer also uses an obsolete form of RAM. Is this right,
and does anyone know if it is easily available (2nd-hand) nowadays,
e.g. on eBay? At the moment the printer takes ages to print even a
SimpleText document...

I opened up a Personal LaserWriter SC, to compare to the LS, since
they are pretty identical externally and GURU said that the SC also
took 4 x 256k SIMMs... but on the SC board there were four very
obvious 30-pin SIMMs installed... so what am I missing on the LS?
