I've sometimes found that a SCSI drive that appears to be toast in a Mac,
will low-level format just fine using a PC and an old Adaptec card. After
formatting in the PC, and tossing the drive *back* in the Mac, the Mac
wouldn't have any problems with a subsequent Mac OS format.

(The reverse is also true: I've had drives that appeared dead in a PC that a
Mac had no problem with. Formatting on the Mac, and putting them back in the
PC, and - wa-la - the drive could then be fdisk'd and formatted for the PC.
Go figure.)

I've found that this behaviour isn't brand, ROM, or model dependent; and I'd
never toss a drive until I'd tried it on both platforms.
