According to "Fix Your Own Mac" by Jan L. Harrington, which I picked up at
the local library for some light reading... :-)
"Steve Wozniak, one of the original developers of the Apple computer, was
instrumental in the development of the Macintosh floppy disk controller.
The chip therefore bears his name: the Integrated Wozniak Machine (IWM).
In conjunction with VIA1 and the SCC, it takes care of the disk operations
in Macs through the Macintosh II. Later Macintoshes have either a Super
Woz Integrated Machine (SWIM) or SWIM2 chip. A SWIM is required to support
the SuperDrive. It is also nearly twice as fast as the IWM."
So, at least, we now know that there were at least two chips in the SWIM
family!
