400K *disks* and 400K *drives* are two different beasts. Any Mac running 7.6.1 or earlier can read 400K *disks* just fine. Your SE sounds like it has a dirty floppy drive or misaligned heads. In that case, try hooking the external up to it and see if the disk will read in there.
