I am starting from "scratch." I need a way to make a 400k disk so that I can put an OS on that disk (with another machine) so I can boot the 512. At this point it seems to be a "can't get there from here" situation.
On another issue, the drive in the 512 seems to have an "odd" problem. The mechanism seems to be "out of register" in that the only way I can get it to accept a disk is to press the "emergency eject" lever with a paper clip. When the machine tries to eject a disk it does not raise the mechanism high enough to align with the front slot. I cleaned and lubed the thing, but the alignment problem remains. Advice? Ken Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without. -- Compact Macs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/>.
