Yo compacters everywhere, Ok folks, I've a mystery here. When starting from my long reliable System 7.1 external hard drive on any number of perfectly good SE compacts, I am getting an alert window with a message of an address error and an error code 39. This is any of several good SEs or Classics. It does the alert box thing each and every startup no matter that the SE's internal drive is good. It does this alert box even when the hard drive in any SE that has been freshly nuked and paved with nothing on it. It does this with or without extensions. With extensions on, it does it at the start of extension loading. With extensions off, it does it after the extensions are loaded as the finder finishes loading. Disk First Aid, Norton's Disk Doctor, Norton's Speed Disk, Disk Warrior (it's an external drive-DW was run from an SE/30 examining this drive),FWB, Virex, and a TechTool desktop rebuild are all happy. I have thrown out preferences and otherwise curbbed its appetite for RAM. Cables, jumpers, and t! ermination have been reseated and otherwise fooled with. SCSI addressing is ok. Changing the SCSI address does nothing. Reloading the hard drive driver does not help. When run not as a startup disk, everything is just fine. It mounts and everything on the disk behaves well. This is my long reliable SE external drive from which I load my preconfigured software onto all my SEs. I really don't want to lose this puppy. Any ideas?
