Somewhere around the time apple introduced the desktop printer, it also introduced the printer description documents (ppd's). These documents contain all information necessary to use laserwriters (the appletalk/postscript one's anyway). The ppd's do have their limitations. Take for instance configurations. I have a laserwriter IIg upgraded to 20 mb internal memory. Still, when trying to change setup I can only choose between 'minimum 4 mb', 'upgraded to 5 mb' and 'upgraded to 8 mb'. Now I wonder about the pre desktop printing era of laserwriter printing, when the extension was called 'laserwriter' instead of 'laserwriter 8'. There were no ppd's back then. The system would would obtain info about the printer from the machine itself and store it somewhere (laserwriter prep?). Could it recognize and handle the 20 mb back then? I can't figure it out just yet. The odd thing is that there is hardly any info about this on the Web. I can't believe I'm the only person on this planet that ever upgraded a laserwriter beyond 8 mb. Sometime ago I tried changing the ppd, but I'm not sure that got me anywhere.
