actually, no.  originally spam referred to excessive cross posting,
usually on unrelated newsgroups but even when done on relevant
newsgroups to an excessive extent.  commercial spam is a later problem,
and the primary problem these days.  i have noted a couple of list
members obsessively posting the exact same text to 2 or even 4
listservs, this is not polite, a question should generally only be asked
on one listserv and possibly re-asked on another listserv if no
responses are forthcoming.  but when it's an easy problem, it's really,
really obnoxious to post it to several list simultaneously and rather
irritating, it's a good way to get me to NOT help you.
