The best width adjustment takes the screen outside the edges of the
viewable area. If you can't adjust to that, then the power supply may be
weak. Adding a fan to that may signal it's untimely death. Using a
voltmeter, place the two leads into the mouse port top right and top
second-to-right. You MUST read between 4.8 and 5.5V. If not, DON'T add a
fan. Run it backless if needed. But keep a fan or any other
current-drawing device out of the Plus until you can do a Pina repair,
(Mac Upgrade Secrets), replacing bad capacitors and diodes.

Since I had the mother board out and the Radius boards installed, I
decided to risk starting it with the fan and Radius stuff in place so I
finished the installation and hit the switch. The screen displayed a
nice checkerboard. I checked the voltage as per the Radius instructions,
at the blue wire on the power cable. They said it should be 4.85 - 4.95
volts. I got 5.8 volts. I turned the voltage down all of the way and got
about 4.9 volts. I re-started. The Radius ROMs displayed the logo on the
start up screen and it booted fine from a floppy. The image width is now
even smaller and for some reason, it won't boot from a SyQuest drive
with either Sys 6 or 7.1. It seems to run out of memory or something,
even with the Radius software installed. I may try Compact Virtual and
see if that helps.

Yeah, I'm going to have to bite the bullet and get Mr. Pina's books.

The width control is actually an adjustable coil. If youy say 'to the
limit', I guess the adjustable core is way out of the coil, on
direction. Try the other direction. Just a wild guess, though.

Actually it's all of the way in. adjusting it outward makes the screen
even smaller.

Ah, that seems to be my cue, since Philip provided me with all the
Compact schematics. According to them, the power connector has 11 pins
in a row. Pin 10 on the connector provides + 12V (red). Pin 9 can be
used as ground (black). Better double check with tast voltmeter.

That validated my voltmeter findings and made me really comfortable
about taping the power cable at those points. Thanks. ;) I had a spare
cable that I modified into a harness for the Radius board and fan.
Thanks also for the connector layout sent offlist.

I had written:

After turning down the brightness pot, I got a clear screen by turning
the focus control up to it's limit.

Sounds like your flyback is on its last legs.
The problem is, the width control is at it's limit as well and the image
size is by necessity, small. The height can be adjusted all of the way
to the edge of the screen.
You shouldn't do that anyway - factory specs are for about a 0.5" border
all the way around to keep the 72 dpi resolution, and Pina specifically
mentions that overadjusting the analogue board beyond that will lead to
premature component failure.

---
Yeah, I only mentioned that I could do that to illustrate the point that
the height control had lots of leeway while the width control couldn't
even be adjusted to specs.. Right now I have the height adjusted
proportionally to the width. It's currently a really small screen. I
wouldn't mind replacing one or two capacitors, if that's the problem but
when you consider that you can still get a good working Plus for $1 to
$5 (free if you live in a city) with a keyboard and mouse, Replacing all
of the capacitors and/or the flyback would be an unjustifiable expense.

Thanks again to all who helped with this. I'm sure the Pina books will
get me the rest of the way. The important thing is that the Radius
accelerator seem to work, even with some home-made cobbling together.

Best, Hardy
