Two come to mind here, Vern; along with a couple of long shots: First, try "unblessing" the system folder you DO NOT wish to start up from. You unbless by dragging the System file out of the system folder to be unblessed. Just drag it out of it's system folder to the root level of the volume. The Mac icon on the unblessed system folder will go away. When you restart, the other blessed folder will be the only one ROM will see. When you want to change startup system folder, you "bless" it again by dragging the System file back onto it's system folder. The Mac icon will reappear. Then go unbless the other system folder you do not wish to start from. Or: Second, and I do this with my multi-volume master external drive: Use a format utility such as FWB to modify the attributes of the volumes involved. Set your preferred startup volume as bootable and set the other by deselecting the boot attribute. You will have to click around in your format utility a bit to find and set these attributes. Once set, they are solid yet easily reset. A couple of long shots here: Try throwing out your system preferences files. Something in there may be corrupted. Then try zapping the PRAM. Something like the choice of startup drive in PRAM may be corrupt. We always look for excuses to try zapping the PRAM anyway. You've got your excuse here and our permission so go and zap away. Bye the waye, I suspect your Mac is always selecting System 6 over System 7 because it counts (read that as discovers) to 6 before it gets to 7, stops there, and boots. Why System Picker isn't working for you is a surprise and why I suspect PRAM. This little Apple utility always works here. Hmmm... Keep us posted. Ooops. Just read your post about having success with your update #3 fix here. You have taught us something. You are becoming a guru, Vern. Thanks for the share. As Gamba suggested, you might wanna go play with this blessing and unblessing stuff. It is kinda fun. But don't let the sense of power get out of hand ;).
