As Pickle pointed out, you're talking about two different kinds of 
connection.  Perhaps you should clarify what sort of internet 
connection you have.  I imagine that most of the pay services require 
PPP connections (for which you would then use Eudora, for example, to 
go in and check your mail) -- from what you write it sounds like this 
is the case.

ZTerm is a terminal emulator (I'm not sure of the technical term, but 
that's what I would call it).  It would allow you to access Pine (or 
other programs) on the server end that would allow you to read your 
mail.

I leave it to others to suggest how to set up a PPP connection in System 6...
