since the se/30 is apparently fast enough to keep up, it definitely
matters.  setting the interleave to more than 0 in this case will slow
it down.  what interleaving does is to set things up on the drive so it
has sectors in a different order so that when the drive gets to the next
sector the mac is ready for the data (IIRC).  if the interleave is set
higher than the mac needs, it's waiting longer for the drive to send the
data than it would otherwise.
