The StyleWriter II driver is best for a StyleWriter II on a compact. The 1200 (and 1500) drivers work fine for all the black ink StyleWriters, but they require a more modern Chooser and I think Color QuickDraw. The proper install disks for these printers include fonts, any necessary Chooser update, and watermark files. I think there is a way to get StyleWriters to print a test page without any computer interaction -- maybe someone else remembers? There is just a single power button on the top, so it couldn't hurt to hold that down as you plug in the power cord. For your friend's computer, a common problem is that AppleTalk gets turned on and takes over the Printer port.
