could be a number of things, most likely some problem with the analog board.

they were probably booted into the built in os and used with a floppy
for some kind of industrial testing or some such.  definitely somewhat
odd but i've heard of an apple II that was still in use 10 years ago to
run a shaking table used to check other equipment for vibration
tolerance.  it may well still be abusing other hardware.

what's your zip again for shipping?  if you can't dump them,
particularly the one with analog problems, i'd be interested in a couple
of the logic boards, for built in control electronics in other projects,
assuming you're willing to pull the boards out.  my money is just
awfully tight now or i'd want the whole things.
