Hi Bill, There are two types of SE's. Resistor models and Jumper models. For the Resistor model, you have to clip the resistor; for the jumper model, you have to remove the jumper. Do NOT clip the resistor if you have a jumper model!
According to the handbook "technology Works Memory Upgrade: Installation Guide" (1990): "If you have the Resistor Model, the logic board will be marked "820-0176-A" or "820-0176-B" just to the right of the 68000 processor. Above SIMM 1 on this model there will be a box marked "RAM size" stenciled in white on the motherboard. Within this box there will be a resistor marked "R35" and a blank space labeled "R36". After installing the RAM, clip R35 on one end and bend it aside to prevent contact. ---- If you have the jumper model, the logic board will be marked "DIP SIMM MAC SE, 820-0250-A, 1988, 630-4250" just to the right of the 68000 processor. Above SIMM 1 on this model there will be a black jumper with "1M 2/4M" Stenciled in white under it on the motherboard. After installing the RAM, remove the jumper completely. If you wish to store the jumper [for later conversion back to 1 MB], you may place it over just one of the jumper pins so that no two of the pins are jumpered. NOTE: although there is also an R35 resistor on this model DO NOT CLIP IT! I did a RAM upgrade a couple weeks ago and it was easy-peasy, even for my all-thumbs self.
