ebay or the swaplist. you need a cable with a db25 connector and the
apple serial connector on the other, generally called a "modem cable".
with such a cable, you can use any standard serial external modem (not a
winmodem, they use windows to run the modem!). alternately you can buy
one of the apple modems with the right connector already on it, but some
say they aren't so great. if you are too far from the phone company to
get 56k connections, a slower modem like a 33.6k modem is likely to work
better. i've used a couple of modem brands, and one totally lacking a
brand i got on ebay with no problems on an se/30 and latter an lc475.
pretty much any serial modem will do. i'd suggest posting a "wanted" ad
on the swaplist, you'll likely get several good offers, don't forget the
cable!. you might even check local computer stores, i got one cheap
that way because they didn't have an adapter (i know enough electronics
to solve that problem), junk stores and salvation army and such stores
may have them as well. you might also check pawn shops, though they
usually only have complete systems since the pawn value of a modem is
about nil. i'm assuming you are in the u.s., but ebay and the swaplist
etc. should be useful nearly anywhere.
