I bought a Mac SE with a Superdrive about 4 years ago from a charity
shop for $10. It was a cast-off from a school district about 75 miles
away. It didn't have a power cord, so they didn't know if it worked.
Once I acquired a power cord I found out it did work.
My oldest daughter just turned 3 last week. She's been playing with
the keyboard since about age 6 months and the computer itself before
she was 2 years old by getting letters to appear by hitting the
keyboard and moving around the mouse. She's been highlighting blocks
of text for some time and gets a real kick out of it.
Two months ago she showed me ("Daddy, look!") how she brought up the
word processor program on the SE. She positioned the mouse over the
icon and clicked it twice. My mouth dropped...
About a month ago she figured out how to turn the computer on in the
back and pretty much doesn't need me anymore except when it comes time
to save files and Shut Down. That'll probably be a while before she
gets the hang of it. Right now when she's done she just flips the
switch on the back of the Mac to shut it off.
I just love how simple this computer is - and that it takes so much
abuse from my kids.
