the disk is fine, most likely, it's the dreaded filter problem so many people are 
talking about, see: < http://www.biwa.ne.jp/~shamada/fullmac/repairEng.html#NoPointer> 
for diagnostic help.  if the disk goes bad, you'll get a flashing question mark 
because it can't find a system to boot, the gray screen indicates it's not getting 
that far.  sorry, but it is a reasonable fix for someone with a soldering iron.
