Yo compacters everywhere, Just a share of a little success I had today. Some time ago when an ancient working SyQuest 44 was just handed to me, I adopted it putting it to work on my bench at the senior center. This drive and the box of disks that came with it became my archive tool to preserve all of the software we liberate from donated Macs. This SyQuest was so much better than archiving on floppies. A second 44 came along which I put on my home bench. Now I could liberate software at either bench and move it easily between benches in big batches. Pretty neat. For my own needs, the 44 was still a bit puny. So I looked into and bought a couple of used SyQuest 135 drives. I like these 135 drives. Of course the 44 and 135 are not compatible unless you think of a SCSI cable between drives as compatible.
I learned the 135s worked well with Macs 020 and better. The 135 caused an address error freeze at the end of startup when connected to a 68000. Oh well. The 44 became the SyQuest for all things 68000 while the 135 became the SyQuest for all things 030 and up (I only have one 020; an LC with a DayStar 040 card which really isn't an 020 at all). Now, because I am one of us who doesn't think much of LaCie Silverlining drivers which are the drivers installed and supplied by SyQuest, I have installed FWB drivers, either 2.0.6 or 3.0.2 as they both work fine from the LC through my Beige G3. I do believe the 44s for the 68000 Macs have FWB 2.0.6 installed. Why the 44s work on everything while the 135s work on only the 020 and up with the same FWB 2.0.6 driver is beyond my knowledge. Well, as a longshot, today I installed my most ancient FWB 1.8 driver on a SyQuest 135 disk. And it now mounts on my bench SE just fine. Well, it is a bit touchy. I have to restart when it occassionally hangs the same old way at the first boot of the day. However, when mounted, it is solid. So solid, I can even eject the 135 disk with the FWB 1.8 driver and mount another disk with either an FWB 2.0.6 or 3.0.2 driver. They mount solid. So, with the SE, I startup with a 135 disk with the FWB 1.8 driver first and then use any disk in my library. We shall see how useful this is in time.
