You may have been wrong about that detail, but I was wrong on two other
things.

My system folder is 31M; that doesn't leave alot of room on a 40M HD for
my other apps. I know I could slim it down by throwing out numerous
Preferences and a few CPs and Extentions that I don't use any more, but I
don't think it'll get that much smaller to make it worth the time.

The other more important thing is that the noise is coming from the
SE/30; I found that out after I tried opening an old disk utility
(couldn't remember what it did, and thought I may get lucky) and it
locked up the computer. (probably required 24 bit addressing), so I shut
the compter off and the noise went away. The external drive was still on.

So I used Mt Everything to spin down the internal drive, and that wasn't
the problem either. I'm guessing the power supply and/or analog board is
making the noise, or perhaps the fan. Is this whine a sign of bad things
to come in your experience? Or do all compacts make this noise? I can't
recall if either of my SE's whined like this or not, and they're not
handy for me check.

At any rate, I appreciate the advice thus far, and I now have another
usefull utility.

Thanks,

J White
