If you get a blinking orange light on the front of the monitor when you hook
it to
your Mac's video card and the Mac is on and the driver is loaded, you've got
a dead
monitor.

The black residue is a sign of heavy use. Most residue is light brown or
non-existent.
That black stuff may, if it's accompanied by a burned smell, spell the death
of the
flyback and maybe other components as well.
