Yo compacters everywhere,

Here is my third week's work with the Classic IIs. This is my configuration
work around System 7.1 leading into a couple of problems and questions for
which I solicit advice from the list. These Classic IIs will become
classroom trainers up at the senior center. Please remember that my goal is
to setup the Classic II just as close as I can to resemble an out of the
box iMac experience.

Bill

The Magnificent Seventeen #3

System 7.1u3 as configured on Classic II 6/160 (Drive Setup 8.1.0)
* = known to work with System 7.1 on SE & Classic 68000 Macs also

Control panels (Apple):
Apple Menu Options 1.1.2* (enables sub-menus in Apple Menu)
Date & Time 7.5.1* (enables system Menu clock, etc)
 & Map 7.5.1* (enables permanent location setting)
WindowShade 1.3.1* (replaced with Appearence ext)
PC Exchange 1.0.5 (enables SCSI driver preferences & use of PC disks)
 & Mac Easy Open 1.1.3 (conflicts with external drives)
 (& Mac Easy Open ext 1.0.4)
Sound 8.0.5* (enables improved sound managementfeatures)
 (& Sound Manager 3.3 ext)
Speech 1.5* (enables MacinTalk 2 - Mr. Hughes)
 (& Speech Manager 1.4* ext)
 (& MacinTalk 2 1.4* ext)

Extensions (Apple):
Appearence Extension 1.0.2 (enables Sys 8+ features including:
        WindowShade, drag edges, sticky menus, 3D folders & trash;
        also improves look of Smart Scroll scroll bars;
        unfortunately it disables DoubleScroll)
        (note: Appearence 1.0.2 & Date &Time 8.0.1 control panels become
        documents thus unuable to control appearence items)
Macintosh Drag & Drop 1.1 (1.1.1?)
Thread Manager 2.1 (enables Control Strip and CSMs)
 (& Sound Volume CSM in CSM in System Folder)

Desk Accessories (Apple):
Chooser 7.3* (for StyleWriter 1200, DeskWriter 6, and newer Chooser extensions)
* Shut Down 1.1* (DA in Apple Menu aliased to the desktop shuts down Mac)

Applications (Apple):
Find File 1.1.3*
 (& Find File Extension 1.1.1*)
SimpleText 1.3.3* (SimpleText 1.4 works but conflicts with Speech)
Stickies 1.0.3*

Utilities (Apple):
Apple HD SC Setup 7.3.5*
Disk First Aid 7.2.4
??? Disk Copy 6.3.2

Third Party enhancements:

Control panels:
DoubleScroll 2.1.1 (Does not work with Appearence set)
DragAnyWindow 4.5*
EjectMenu 2.0 (EjectMenu 1.1.1 works fine with 68000)
 (& EjectMenu 2.0 ext)
Extensions Manager 2.0.1*
 (& Extensions Manager 2.0* ext)
Finder Options 1.0 (enables undocumented features)
Moire 3.22*
PopChar 2.7.1*
SCSIProbe 4.3*
Smart Scroll 3.2*
SoftwareFPU 3.04
SuperClock 4.0.4* (used for Menu Bar clock and clock features)

Extensions:
Eyeballs 1.0*
Natural Order 1.0
Shutdown FX 1.5*
The Grouch 2.5B3* (Works with Appearence set OK)

Startup Items:
FreeRamPlus 1.1* (reports available RAM in tiny box on Desktop)
PRAM Battery Checker 1.02*
Yoo Hoo* (Clixsound sound file to signal end of startup)

CURRENT PROBLEMS:
1: The Appearence set is a mixed blessing:
It gives:
        sticky menus;
        WindowShade;
        drag edges on active window;
        improved appearence of Smart Scroll scroll button.
It takes away:
        Double Scroll with its desired sets of scroll bar arrows;
        Appearence and new Date & Time control panels become
                documents thus do not function.
THUS: We have a choice of either Appearence v. Double Scroll et al:
        Appearence without control (the defaults are acceptable); OR:
        Double Scroll, WindowShade, and StickyClick control panels.

2. I am experiencing a lot of consistant repetative DA and application
quits accompanied with a Type 1 error. The DAs and apps are ok.
        DAs include (note: many other DAs work fine):
                Scrapbook 7.1: quits when changing up or down one item every
                        time;
                Art RoundUp: immediately quits on launch every time. This DA
                works from a Plus/System 6 to my Beige G3/OS 8.1 but quits
                here.
        Applications include (just discovered while loading a few
        games):
                Shanghai 2.0*: quits when selecting a new game after
                        successfuly playing a first game every time.
                        This game runs from at least an SE/7.0 thru an
040/OS
                        8.1 but quits here.
        Also, Hangman Plus 1.0 freezes when a second letter is selected.
        It can be force quit every time.
        Klondike 2.1, Checkers 1.0, MacMines 2.0.5, and TETRIS 1.3
        complete with sound files play just fine.

Note: hard drive is a non-Apple drive thus formatted with Drive Setup. This
drive and files have been Disk First Aided, Nortoned, Diskwarriored,
Virexed, desktop rebuilt by Techtool, and has had its hard drive driver
updated. Prefs have been tossed and softwares have been reloaded. All a
couple of times.

NEXT: It is time to start loading applications. But I would like to solve
my two problems first. Any advice is appreciated.

After installing our classroom applications, I will return to the System
Folder loading Quicktime, Open Transport, then an online suite.

QUESTIONS:
1: Is any version of the Monitors control panel ever needed or even useful
in a Classic II? Somewhere I think I read...

2: Is there any way to create a functioning Shutdown Items folder in System
7.1?

3. Where do I find Hangman 3.0, the equivalent of Hangman 2000 purpose
built for us small screen black and white compact 030 Macs?
