Yo compacters everywhere,

A status report of success with some good help from our listers. And I've
changed the name of the thread because we are moving on from the Appearance
Extension issue-I think we have a definitive solution.

Lister Bob aka: ELN/rlf9 <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> put me on to:

<ftp://ftp.apple.com/developer/Development_Kits/>

where I FTPd the Appearance SDK <Appearance_SDK_1.0.4.sit.hqx>
and the Drag+Drop SDK <Macintosh_Drag_-_Drop.sit.hqx>

The Appearance SDK solved all of my Appearance Extension issues with some
compromises. Originally, I had followed instructions posted here long ago
about dragging the Appearance set back onto System 7. The earlier
instruction was to drag the Appearance Extension, Appearance control panel,
and the Date & Time control panel from OS 8.1 back into System 7. This gave
me my problems and original thread here. This Apple Appearance SDK has all
the right pieces and instruction to enable OS 8.1 appearance features all
the way back to System 7.1. Specifically, it involves the use of an
AppearanceCDEV (which is actually an application) in lieu of the Appearance
control panel to control the features of the Appearance Extension. It works
well on a Classic II. I doubt that you are going to find this unique
AppearanceCDEV application anywhere else though I haven't looked. This one
needs to be archived. The results are facinating. The pieces of the
Appearance SDK give a Classic II running System 7.1 WindowShade, drag edges
on windows, sticky menus, and the 3D platinum appearance. The WindowShade
and platinum appearance features may be switched on or off. 3D platinum on
a one bit screen is a bit of a zero but you do get the Copeland icons. If
you have SmartScroll installed, it is enabled along with the platinum
appearance also improving the texture of the proportional scroll bars. If
you have DoubleScroll installed, the mere presence of this Appearance set
disables DoulbleScroll; damn. At the FTP site, there is also a v1.0.3 of
this Appearance SDK kit. It contains the same versions of the needed
pieces. The slightly larger download must be later developer stuff.

The Drag+Drop SDK download gives the full measure of all drag and drop
features on even a plain Jane System 7.1 even on the crippled Classic II.
Again, following information from this forum, I had already dragged the Mac
Drag and Drop extension back which worked within a document. This D&D SDK
contained other extensions and a new Finder 7.1.3 to enable text clippings
and all those other kinds of drag and drop too. Be careful here. When you
swap in that new Finder, you gotta keep the faith and add all of the pieces
too. I was quite surprised to discover I could not empty the trash until I
had installed all of the pieces.

This Finder 7.1.3 is also the key to bringing AppleScript to System 7.1.
The new Finder is in and working. So soon I will be looking at adding
AppleScript.

To my thread here about formatting drives for our beloved 68000 and '030
compacts with the Apple HD SC Setup 7.3.5 utility or Apple's Drive Setup
utility, our Saul Brody <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> responded:

Thus, I look next to trying trying the HDSC driver to see if this helps my
remaining big problem with inappropriate application quittings in my quest
to achieve my Classic II cum iMac. My current questions are:

1: Is any version of the Monitors control panel ever needed or even useful
in a Classic II? Somewhere I think I read...

2: Is there any way to create a functioning Shutdown Items folder in System
7.1?

3. Where do I find Hangman 3.0, the equivalent of Hangman 2000 purpose
built for us small screen black and white compact 030 Macs?

4. Is there an extension enabling Command + Delete to empty the trash? My
Finder Options control panel does not seem to do it any more if it ever did
in a Classic II. The purpose of my project suggests an extension solution
rather than going the Quickeys application route.

Any and all advice is appreciated. It has got me to this point.

Bye the waye. All of this stuff is in or readily achived with MacOS 7.6.1
which runs on a Classic II just fine except it is slower. For one of us
familiar with Macs, the OS 7.6.1 trade off of speed for features may be
acceptable. For training first time folks up at the senior center, I want
the speed of System 7.1 so I must fight for the features.

Thanks guys.

Bill
