I would start with standard things like termination and drive ID. Check the terminators on the drive and see if they are installed. Even if they are installed, they could be bad. You might try removing them, and sticking an external terminator on the case. Make sure that the scsi ID of the external drive is not set to either 0 or 7 (7 is usually reserved for the controller and the 0 is usually the internal drive).
