Dear Friends, The story so far: Two members of this list started arguing, bringing up long-dead issues and trading insults in one form or another. I asked them to stop, and threatened banning from the list. One member got a little petulant, but then did stop. The other declined to do, and said he was resigning from the list. I compounded the confusion by inadvertently quoting a private email, for which I have offered my unreserved public apology. Since then, both the list traffic and off-list emails to me have hardly stopped. You would think that we were discussing something truly significant rather than an argument on a mailing list dedicated to 15 year old computers. I'm sorry Jeff took umbrage and, apparently, has left the list. But I'm not going to lose sleep over it. I don't care who started the argument, who had the last say, or who was more in the right or less in the right. I simply try to nanny the list to keep the signal to noise ratio over a reasonable threshold. I haven't got time to engage in long debates, on or off list. I'm like a football (all rules!) referee who must call decisions as he thinks best at the time. I can't spend 24 hours after each 'match' looking at the video evidence about every decision that I made. I shall not reply on or off list to any further emails about the pickle vs JSG controversy. I would ask you not to send them. Please, let things die, for better or worse, and let's get back to talking about 15 year old computers! Please, get a sense of proportion.
