Greetings compacters,

Spent a gentle evening on my pallet 'o' Plusses. Having sold all the
ones that are fine all round, I'm now down to module level switch and
fix. About 40% have bad display jitter, shake or shimmer, about 20%
have bad screen burn, about 10% are totally dead, and about 30% have
bad FDs. No bad logic boards so far.

I took apart one of the bad-FD plusses, ready to install a
'hoped-to-be-good' FD from an otherwise dead (and heat-related noxious
smelling) Plus. Looked in the floppy slot to find one of the
thumb-screw thingies that attached the mice plugs to the early
compacts. It must be an inch and a half long, and the 'thumb-screw' bit
only just fits in the fascia slot. But some kid from the school that
seems to have been using these Plusses until 2000 (!) somehow managed
to get it in there. Gently removed it, and the FD works fine.

Four fully working nice Plusses sourced from five defective ones. But
if I could get my hand on that brat. . . . .

Stuart
