I don't know it was the Asante Mac Link Extender but I remember a product that sounds similar from years ago. It connected to the Printer Port and provided an Ethernet interface but it did not use LocalTalk on the Printer Port. It used about a 1Mbps serial connection so it was faster than LocalTalk but not full Ethernet Speed.
