> If you had a spare SE 4/40, what would you do with it?
Funny you should ask, since I just got an SE yesterday: 2.5 MB RAM, 500 MB
hard drive, System 6.0.8, all for the incredible price of one dollar! To
think this machine (with only 1 MB RAM and a 20 MB hard drive) cost $3,700
16 years ago!
It's been about a dozen years since I worked on a compact Mac ("worked on"
is the key phrase here, since I could certainly never afford to purchase one
of these babies back then). Hooked up a keyboard and mouse, plugged it in
and flipped it on. It fired up and was almost instantly ready for action--I
wish my G3 booted up that fast.
Once I confirmed that it worked, I headed into the basement to find all my
old 800K floppies. It was a great blast from the past playing all the old
games: Shufflepuck, Tetris, MacYahtzee, Copter II, Crystal Quest, Balloon
Chase, Darts, and Blackjack. My game playing-time was pretty limited,
however, as my seven-year-old took over the machine and played until
bedtime. He's completely enthralled by this antique computer, enjoying it
more than he does his 8500.
Aside from old games, I'm not sure what else I'll do with the SE, but it
will great fun playing around with it and reliving my "youth." Not bad for
a buck.
