It takes disassembling the Mac to see what shape the floppy drive is in.
Once you can boot to the floppy, you'd need a second (external) drive anyway
to place the formatting disk in to handle the external hard disk.
On the rare instance that the floppy-controller on the motherboard is bad,
there are a few of us who'd be happy to get you another one.
