Welcome back to the fold. I just joined the list myself and was talking about the SE/30 grayscale issue. I have the card you're looking for in my SE/30. What you need (and it's actually 2 cards) is called a Micron Xceed Color30 card with the grayscale option. The second card replaces the small card on the back of the CRT in the SE/30 and allows it to display 8-bit grayscale. The Color30 is a PDS card and takes up the slot in the SE/30.
The PDS board is pretty hard to find, one just went for over $200 on eBay. The second card is also hard to find, though I think someone was making clones of them.
As for the Asante ethernet question, I'd check eBay. I got one of the micro en/sc adapters for under $15 there for my Powerbook 180, and I used an Asante mini en/sc with my SE/30 for a while as well. They're very reliable, and I prefer them to the ones made by Dayna, though I've used them successfully as well.

The internal disk drive is rather sticky but still functional so I will
need to break open the FAQ to re-read how to clean the thing.
I also have Macintosh 512K, which is quite "fast" so to speak. That is, it
boots quickly and performs read/write operations quicker than my Win2K
monster at work!!!
I also have a Mac 512ke which is an upgraded Mac512 with the Dove SCSI
upgrade card. It makes a little difficult to change out the battery, but I
haven't had the opportunity to use the SCSI port yet on this computer. I
routinely use this Mac for internet access using an older version of
Eudora and Telnet for email and access to shell accounts where I can also
use PINE for email and Lynx for text based web browsing. It has one MB RAM
and is a nice little machine.
I have a Mac SE which works, but I am still smitten with the floppy-only
Internet access bug, so I don't use it much. It has a ethernet card
installed (10-baseT?) to which I could plug in a cable with cable TV
fittings for ethernet. If there is a cable to RJ45 adapter I would like to
know about it. I could find a use for this one yet!
I also have a Mac Plus with 4 MB installed RAM. Very sweet. It has an
external hard drive which I occasionally use that is 80 MB and uses System
7.1. When I use the hard drive I can also use old versions of MacWeb.
I have two SE/30s in need of repair, and I have not yet diagnosed what could be their problems.
A final question: is there a way to get a SE or SE/30 to have 256 levels
of gray scale? Surely there must be a video adapter card that can be used.
