Last weekend was pretty busy for me and my SE/30.

I went to Office Max to buy an ink cartridge for my HP printer, as it was
low on ink (OT, I apologize) While I was there I was going to pick up a
box or two of floppy disks. The clerk asked if he could help me find
something and I told him I was looking for floppies. His response was
"Duh! you're looking right at them" After a few sentences of us verbally
abusing each other I left to go to Office Depot to buy my printer ink and
disks.

This guy (an anti-"switcher" that is quite helpful to me) got me the
stuff I needed and asked what else I needed. I said I was going to look
at the furniture to look for a new desk to put my old mac on. He said
they had a great sale on one brand, but he had other customers in his
department and apologized for not being allowed to go show them to me. I
went over and looked and found the perfect desk for my SE/30, and as an
added bonus it had a shelf below the keyboard that would hold my latest
project, a 7300 (OT again!) and the desktop was large enough to hold the
SE/30 and the monitor.

After spending a little time assembling and an hour or so looking in my
shed for a few screws that would replace the ones the kit was missing, I
had the perfect desk. That is untill I started to put things on it. On my
old desk that was almost exactly twice as wide as a compact Mac, I had
the SE/30 on top of an external HD and off to the side I had a SyQuest
drive with my modem on top of it. Since this new desk is 6" or so taller
than the old desk, I didn't want the external HD beneath my SE/30, as the
screen would be up higher than eye level while I sit in my chair. And
there isn't enough room for the SE/30, the monitor for my 7300, and the
two external devices on this desk.

My solution was to pull the drive out of the external case, and put it in
the SE/30. My SE/30 now has 20M RAM, a 1 G HD, and an ethernet card
inside of it. The SyQuest drive fits perfectly on this little CD shelf
beneath the keyboard drawer once I removed the CD rack. It's almost like
that shelf was made for it. I only have about 3/4" of extra width and
about 1 1/2" between the top of the drive and the drawer.

So my little hour trip to the office supply store turned out costing me
about $70 more than I was supposed to spend (that's nothing new) and
about 6 hours of my time. But this room looks a bit nicer than it did
before and my 7300 isn't on a TV tray begging to be dumped over anymore.

Moral of the story: Never buy printer cartridges, as the one I bought
that day is still in its box, as are the floppies I bought.
