This always erupts into a firestorm of controversy when we answer the
question you've posed.

The safety-minded will tell you to make and use the discharge tool that
Larry Pina shows in his repair books. A long-shank blade screwdriver with a
1 megohm resistor.

Then there are those of us who are quite safe and sane who know, after a
dozen years or more of cracking the Compacts open that the CRT bleeds itself
after a minimum of two hours of off time, and you may work in the belly of
the beast with no fear from it's sting. Allow it to sit a day unpowered if
you wish.

The biggest and most consistent mishaps are the broken tube-neck and the
hissing sound that accompany a rough treatment around the tube-neck.
