Greetings, Compact Mac friends:
I haven't done my homework on something and thought, that with the thread about the SE/30, here's a good time to ask. My Mac guru told me a few years ago that "popular legend" he had heard was that Apple named the '030 processor line of Macs the "x" model (e.g. IIfx) and was considering calling the SE with '030 processor the "SE/x" and that for obvious reasons, Apple just stuck with "SE/30". Any truth in that one?
Based on similar rumors, urban legends, and jokes circulating about various humorously named or almost-named things, I'd say if it was considered at all it was in jest. Apple might be known for Thinking Different, but even they'd probably not name a product like that.
Besides, there are quite a few models with '030s without x (IIci, si, etc).
Would have been pretty funny though :)
