There are controls internally that set brightness, etc., via screw-slot settings. If these have become flaky due to time, heat, etc., the first step is to adjust them just to clean the potentiometer. This should include the flyback transformer which will have one or two adjusters. Bright and focus. Be careful not to over-brighten. It kills a dying flyback. If this fixes it, good. If not, then one or more things, particularly solder joints, (parts where the solder joins a prong or pin to the trace on the motherboard), need to be inspected and re-soldered.
