Many thanks to all of you who answered my query regarding the possibility

An appalling attitude, Roger :-) All compact Macs are to be cherished, worshipped and enhanced to their maximum capacity or the depth of your wallet, whichever comes first. Given time, you should be able to get an SE/30 logic board which is a direct swap for the SE l/b and gives you speed, FDHD support and improved karma. Even in the UK, an SE/30 board are available from time to time for ten pounds or so; the motherboard for an SE with FDHD ROMs will cost about the same. Once you've done the first enhancement, you'll get sucked in to buy the ethernet adapter, colour video adapter for an SE/30, 68030 or even 68040 accelerator, loads of RAM, big hard disk, external SCSI CD writer et al. If you're a masochist, you can even run M$ Word 6 (I get more pleasure from Crystal Quest, personally).
Appletalk sounds like a good idea to link it with my 9500.
Beer money for a pair of LocalTalk or PhoneNet adapters plus cable in the UK. Don't forget about using an external SCSI drive to transfer data from your 9500 to the SE. The drive should be formatted in HFS and have an interleave that is appropriate for the SE -- the easiest way is to use a formatter on the SE to set up the drive.
