Some of the Classics and Classic II's are subject to mysterious failures.
The ROMS are socketed, as are the RAM sticks.

Put the whole motherboard in the dishwasher. Then let it dry in hot sun or a
warm oven, (NOT MICROWAVE) for a few days.

I've heard from a lot of folks that swear by that method.
