I go through these steps: *open the case and check the power and SCSI cables to the hard drive. *Take the drive out of its sled and check the SCSI ID number by looking at the jumper settings. IT SHOULD be zero, but any number's ok. Make sure you set the external drive to a higher number. *Get a drive formatter like Lido7.56, Micronet SCSI Utilities, APS Utilities, or viewer like SCSI Probe or Mt. Everything and use it to MOUNT the internal drive NOT format it. Hook the external up. Or boot from a floppy having one of the above mentioned utilities and a System Folder. Run the SCSI Utility and see if you can bring the internal back to life. Listen to be sure you can hear the internal drive spinning. If NOT, it may have stiction, and need to be held-in-hand and slapped onto a thickly-folded towel on a table at least twice. Place the internal back inside and fire up the Mac. Get those contents copied to something else fast. Jeff -- Compact Macs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/>.
