Clark is right -- you can't use ordinary telephone cables. There are two problems:
The Mac connector is narrower than a regular phone cable (although some phones also
use this slimmer connector), and the connections are reversed on one end, as Clark
mentioned.

If you need to make your own, you can buy RJ11 phone plugs from Radio Shack (here in
the U.S., anyway). Those aren't slim enough, though, so some filing is needed to
make them fit. Then wire 'em up correctly with the four-conductor phone cable of
your choice. Choose funky colors if you want. Works fine.

If you get it backwards, some magic smoke will be lost, and you -- and the Mac --
will be unhappy.
