First, you don't need to fear the crt. It's unfortunate that so many well-meaning but not-very-knowledgeable people have spread such dire warnings about how you could die by merely opening it up. It leads to people like you being terrified to open up their machines to fix them! And ignore all the online advice about needing to discharge the crt first, blah blah blah. It's complete nonsense, and may in fact expose you to the very danger that you're supposed to fear! As long as the thing's not plugged in when you open it up, you will be ok. At absolute worst, you will get an unpleasant zork of the same order as what you get when you grab a doorknob after walking vigorously on a carpet on a dry day. And that's only if you disconnect the crt high-voltage connector (no reason at all to do this routinely; just ignore what others have written and leave it be; it's very well insulated). If you are still paranoid, just leave it unplugged for a day or so before opening it up. Self-discharge will drop the crt voltage enough so that, even if you should ignore all I've been saying and grab the business end of the high voltage wire, it will zap you even less. Second, the Zip drive should boot fine, as long as you have a bootable system, a compatible driver (like 4.2), termination set properly (on, if it's the only scsi device hooked up), and scsi ID set to a non-conflicting value (most internal drives are set to ID=0, so choose other than that for your Zip; it's been long enough since I've used a Zip that I no longer remember what the options are, but I think you have a choice of 2 IDs, at least).
