This gets odder and odder - 160MB Apple branded IBM H3171 drive - works perfectly. Tried it once - not recognized. Terminated and rebooted. Tried again got a happy Mac then it went back to the flashing disk/? that was still flashing (not locked like other drives). Booted from a floppy and drive came up in the desktop. Stuffed the boot floppy's System Folder on it and rebooted and bingo.

My head hurts. Do I need a custom driver on non-Apple drives to boot them maybe?

"Never send a human to do a machine's job."
                                -The Matrix

I've been lurking for a while, and thought I'd better chime in. I wish that I had some good news for you - I can't really give you an answer because I've always had that problem with my Mac Plus. Mine's not quite stock, it has a Radius Accelerator and Full Page Display.

But long ago, I tried to add a 100 mb CMS external drive. In those
days, 100 mb was a Big Deal (tm). It would format, I'd interleave
it either 3:1 or 5:1, install the System, it would boot once, then
flashing question mark and you know the rest. I talked with CMS tech
support at the time, and they told me I'd probably never get that
drive to work with a Plus. They wouldn't tell me why, but nothing
worked. The Plus was already running off an older CMS SCSI drive
that was originally made for an Apple II. It was really slow, but
never failed. It's still here working after 15 years. It's an
Epson mechanism.

Recently, I was trying to add an Asante SCSI network adapter (which
also failed miserably because the ROM in my Radius wouldn't run on
anything newer than 6.0.5 and you need 6.0.8 for the Asante) and
it gave me an opportunity to try some newer hard drives as I was
trying to upgrade the System.

Bottom line, I couldn't get anything to work. Exactly the same
symptoms you are describing. I tried a 40 mb Apple ROM drive from
and LC, an 80 mb Apple ROM drive from a Centris, and a 1 gb Apple
ROM drive of unknown origin. All would format and run fine with
either a Centris 650 or 660 AV or even 8600/300. I even tried the
old CMS 100 mb drive again just for kicks. It would also format
and run fine on the "newer" machines but not the Plus. I switched
cables, termination, everything and was unssuccessful at each turn.

And the Plus just keeps chuggin away with the old 40 mb CMS/Epson
drive!

BTW - ditch Lido - it's evil.
