Subject: Networking MacOSX to System7

Dear List:

First let me catch everyone up to speed on what I have done so far. I
have a Centris 650 acting as a gateway for several compact macs. The
Centris has Ethernet on it. Using IPNetRouter I have routed the
Internet from the Centris through MacIP over localtalk (phone-net) to
the compact macs. So far so good. I can share files, connect to the
Internet, share printers, life is good.

Now, I want to be able to share a MacOS X box with the Centris and by
extension to the Compact macs. The Centris is running System 7.5.3. I
have installed Network Software Installer 1.4.5 and Appleshare
Workstation 3.5 on the Centris as suggested by System 6 Heaven here:

http://www.euronet.nl/users/mvdk/osx.html

I have also installed Share Points on my ibook running 10.3 and checked
the Use Appletalk checkbox that does something in Netinfo.

I can ping the IP address of the Centris 650 fine. However, I cannot
see the Centris if I try afp://192.168.0.4 (Centris IP) into Connect to
Server... in the Go menu of the finder. I also cannot see it from the
classic-mode chooser. So, what am I doing wrong? I have all the right
software, why isn't it working?

Ok, next problem, I also cannot ping anything on the 192.168.2.0
network (the network I assigned for the compact macs) from my OS X box.
maybe I don't understand routing well enough, but I don't understand
why I can't ping that network.

You may also have to turn on appletalk in Directory Services. It's in the Applications/Utilities folder. One thing Panther did was make appletalk harder to activate!
I did that on this TiBook, now I can also connect to a sharepoint folder from my PB520c running 7.6.1 and the SE/30 running 7.5.5. I use Appleshare client 3.8 on the PB and 3.7.4 on the SE/30. That version says it's for OS 7.5.3 and later.
I also can't connect from the X machine down, however - this one is wireless and I haven't tried it wired to the router yet. The older machines don't show up in the network browser or the connect to server.
