Hmm! Anyone else seen an SE with 'X/YY' on the front? Any ideas? A customisation job?

Stuart

Rather a marketing thing later in the SE's carreer. I bet the machine in question has been built in about 1990. ISTR that when Apple wanted to increase market share in 1989/1990, they re-issued the SE FDHD as a would-be cheap computer for students and High School people (you had to bring a paper to the dealer saying you were a member of some school or university), and at that time the machines were front-labeled "Macintosh SE 1/40" or 1/else, depending on the HD capacity; I'm not sure about the second size of HD offered, but I think it was 80 MB rather than 20. At least this is what happened in Germany; I took my chance at the time, because the first SE I had bought in 1988 (800 k, 1/20) had cost me 4000 DM plus a 2000 DM premium for a 4 MB RAM upgrade, and now, in 1990, there was this "student's Mac" with a 2000 DM price tag; I'm sorry I can't take a picture of the front labelling because I had it upgraded to SE/30 right away for 1500 DM which was a sensationally cheap way to get one of these "wicked fast" machines. I still have it, it's a 128/500 now and going strong. I dropped the Lapis Pro ColorServer 24 card in favour of an Ethernet card since I used a Quadra 840 AV and, after it's much regretted demise, a G4 as my main machine, but it's still fun once you are past the 3 minutes RAM test. I cannot get to all my papers, Apple flyers and magazines of the era right now, having moved, and most of the old stuff is still in boxes somewhere, but I'll keep the thing in mind and post it to the list when I find the "smoking gun". As far as my own stack'o'macs is concerned, no special front labels. Anyone else from a country where the "student's Mac" marketing program was in vigour?

Cheers, OM
