A common cause for low audio in light airplanes is a dried out speaker cone. I have 
also seen rust between the moving coil and the magnet.

Your selected volume is probably stored in PRAM and might get lost due to a bad 
battery but, once you reset it, your choice should last until you shut down and 
restart.

Try with  the audio output jack. Try another speaker. There's one here for free - well 
about 30 of them - if you come get it in Colorado Springs.
