A common cause for low audio in light airplanes is a dried out speaker cone. I have also seen rust between the moving coil and the magnet. Your selected volume is probably stored in PRAM and might get lost due to a bad battery but, once you reset it, your choice should last until you shut down and restart. Try with the audio output jack. Try another speaker.
