Actually it's 6 cells and modern ones are cylindrical and about 7 mm diameter and as 
tall as the battery. Just pry off the metal foil that holds them together. They won't 
shock you and the chemicals won't hurt you even if you break a cell. Wash your hands 
if that happens. It's no stronger than an old lye-based soap. Watch the polarity 
though. The little ends are negative rather than the other way around for D and C 
cells.

Some older 9 volt batteries were made with a stack of rectangular cells. They're all 
probably too old to use now.

I'll put some pictures together and write up a how-to but probably not before the 
weekend.
